Author Study

Every Month I like for my students to learn about a children's book author. I pick some of my favorites, and students can read many of the books the author has written. The students also get the opportunity to learn about the person behind the stories.

August/ September: Kevin Henkes

We will start the author study with Kevin Henkes. We will start the author study and the school year with the book, Chrysanthemum. There are a ton of activities that you can do at the beginning of the year after reading Chrysanthemum, and is a great 'get to know your classmates names' book.

October: Gail Gibbons

Gail Gibbons is another author we will study. Her books are classically creative and cute for the kids. She also has two Halloween books which makes her a perfect October author to study.

November: Mo Willem

In November, we will read and learn all about Mo Willem; the funny, creative author behind the book, Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus. His books are a great way to start the year because they are simple, yet creative and hilarious. The students really get into these stories!

December: Leo Leoni

Leoni isn't as well known as some of the authors we studied, or will study, however his books are equally amazing. His illustrations and stories captivate students young minds. I am very much looking forward to sharing his stories with my students this year.

April: Eric Carle

In April we will read about and discuss the books and art of one of my favorites, Eric Carle. His talent of writing, and illustrations will hopefully excite, and inspire my students. We will not only read many of his great books, but we will try and create some of our own artistic masterpieces.

May: Lois Ehlert

Our last author study will be on Lois Ehlert. Her books are beautifully created and the kids love her stories, as well as her creative illustrations. She uses so much color, and her books are very vibrant. She is wonderful, and a great way to end our great author study with a bang.
